Impressing the Parents

8 Oct

It has been a crazy week in the City of New York. My girlfriend had her parents in town from Macon, Georgia. I had been really nervous about meeting them, but there was no need for that. The Daltrys loved me. I found several places that her football loving dad would appreciate. Here is a survival guide for spending the week with your girl’s parents in New York.

Dinner is always a great way to break the ice between people unless you have selected a place that only you will enjoy for everyone to be forced to eat. I figured that my future in-laws (maybe, maybe) would like the old fashioned steak and potatoes dining. In light of that, I selected a place that also offered sports on big screens. Thistle Hill Tavern is in Brooklyn, so we had to make a hike from Harlem to Brooklyn, but that gave us an excuse to tour a little of the city and boroughs before we sat down for a good old-fashioned Sunday dinner.

I suggested the prime rib, and everyone enjoyed it. My girlfriend does not eat red meat, so she had kale salad with ginger pears, spiced corn nuts, pickled and fresh Swiss chard, and a slaw-style dressing. Sara said it was delicious, and by the emptiness of her plate, I believe she meant it.

Mr. Daltry, also known as Papa Bear, was impressed that I knew so much about football. Thanks to Wikipedia, I was able to convince him that football is not my sport – it is my religious persuasion. He was even more impressed that I paid for dinner. Thanks, Thistle Hill Tavern, for making my girlfriend’s parents think I am amazing. Maybe next time we will have two meals with you.

After dinner, we sat by the big screens and watched half of the game. The ladies went out to explore the neighborhood for shops to buy authentic souvenirs. It was a blast.

As you make your travel arrangements, negotiate with the front desk at the hotel you would like to stay at. Do not necessarily request a lower rate because managers do not often change the price of their rooms. Instead, try to arrange for other perks, including a free breakfast or an upgraded room. You can also ask if they have any other packages or special offers.

A good tip for anyone who will be traveling is to take precautions against things that can cause infectious diseases. If the hotel you’re staying in doesn’t offer free wifi, try asking for a room on the first or second floor. Most of the time in cities, there are tons of cafes around that offer free wifi and you can pick those signals up when you’re on the lower floors.
